11:00 am. To rid yourself of that tantalizing hangover from last night, check out Paesano’s on Girard Ave. These sandwiches are one of the best things you’ve put in your mouth…. except for last night;) But in all seriousness, it is $10 of absolute heaven. Even Anthony Bourdain acclaims it to be one of his favorite sandwiches.
11:30 am. Treat yourself to a fabulous pedicure at Genesis Nail Salon on 2nd street. Pedicures are $25 for men but they do some great work.
12:30 pm. At this point it’s time for a midday drink. Continue walking down 2nd street and stop in Standard Tap. I suggest going to the upstairs bar or the outdoor seating pending the weather. They have a stellar beer list and great food options.
2:30 pm. Hungry again? Walk back towards Genesis Nail Salon and right next door is a spot called Poke Bowl. If you’ve been to Hawaii, then you may know what poke is. If not, it’s pretty much sushi in a bowl- and it tastes damn good. Poke Bowl opened in the summer of 2016, and is already gaining a considerable amount of attention.
3:00 pm. Time for some bowling. North Bowl is an upscale bowling alley on the first floor, and upstairs there’s pool tables, ping-pong tables, and plenty of arcades. If you don’t “game”, no need to worry, they also have a great bar!
5:30 pm. At this point you’re going to have to do a little exercise to get over to the liquor store, which is right next door to Paesano’s. At Wine & Spirits, pick up one bottle of wine for each person in the group… You’ll be eating dinner at my absolute favorite BYOB in Philadelphia- Dmitri’s.
6:30 pm. The earlier you get to Dmitri’s the better. They don’t take reservations; so if there is a wait, go back for another drink at Standard Tap. If not, grab a seat at this intimate hole-in-the-wall and brace yourself for one of the best meals in Philadelphia. My recommendations are: Mediterranean plate is a must, feta and olives, snap peas, plum pasta, grilled octopus, shrimp pil pil, the whole fish of the day- especially if it’s the branzino, the salmon, and the grilled lamb. For dessert: crème caramel, rice pudding, and chocolate pot de crème.
9:00 pm. By this point you are most likely a little drunk and very full. Heritage jazz bar is the perfect remedy to relinquish a few calories from that glutinous meal. Order yourself a few cocktails, sit back in the plush leather chairs that catch the gentle breeze from 2nd street, and take in the harmonious sounds of the jazz band.
11:00 pm. I said this excursion was only going to be 12 hours, but bars are open for another 3 hours! Luckily for you, just a few steps beyond Heritage lay the 700 Club. NO this is not a club where you will find promiscuous twenty-something’s in skimpy dresses, but rather this is a soccer bar by day and a hipster club by night. To give you a better understanding of this place: the shower stall is now the DJ booth, the vintage sofas look like my grandmother’s living room, and the kitchen is the bar. The music played usually ranges between the 70’s-90’s, and is a great way to end evening.
